Burnt Ash 5s V Burnt Ash 6s
By Laura Thornton
5s vs 6s (from a 5s perspective!!)
What a game to start with… after a few weeks of friendlies played both against each other and combined against Tulse Hill and Dulwich, it was time to kick off the season with Burnt Ash ladies 5s against Burnt Ash ladies 6s.
The 6s took the psychological upper hand before we even started by going straight up to the pitch, they clearly didn’t realise half of us were too asleep to notice!!
Our new skipper, Martine, got us all focussed and warned us of the dangers of the oppositions youngsters and speedy players and reminded us to watch out for the reunited pairing that made up a vital part of the 6s defense (Double Trouble by name, Double Trouble by nature, especially for the 5s attackers).
A few warm up drills helped to settle us down and then we set ourselves up ready for push back, a few changes from when the team sheet went out meant we had 12 players each to start with.
The first 5-10 minutes went past in a bit of a blur… we had created a few chances and won a couple of short corners, but nothing had come of them. We carried on determined knowing that if we carried on like this, linking up well and creating spaces for ourselves we’d get there. Avril was brilliant shouting out from defense helping us see the options and encouraging players to push up when needed.
We got the ball into the goal but it was quickly disallowed, it had been kicked in! Oops!
Shortly after that we won ourselves another short corner… we worked the slip to Jo O’Hara on the left, but the 6s got it back out of the D, only for it to be quickly fired back in and after a bit of scrabbling around we got it into the goal… It was then disallowed again as the original injection hadn’t come completely out of the D… a small debate ensued but the decision stood.
Not long after that, a quickly taken side line ball shot across to just outside the top of the D to Sue D who passed it straight into Jo OH who hit a great strike which fired into the bottom left of the goal… 1-0 to the 5s!
Quite quickly after that we doubled our lead from a rebound and a scrabble, all because we were keeping the pressure inside their 25.
The 6s had a couple of breakaways but our defensive force that was Val, Bev, Jo N and Avril quickly cleared up and passed it back to the midfielders, Sue D was absolutely everywhere on the pitch and was really tiring out Charlotte H (in her first ever league game) as the opposite centre mid… The balls were being run well down both the sides too with Martine linking up well with Caroline and Lou L as well as Jo O’H working well with Sarah J (special thanks to Sarah for agreeing to double up for us, you were amazing as always).
Another very close short with Avril getting the ball to me perfectly just by the left post, that I then missed (so sorry Av)… then it was half time…
We changed things up a bit for the second half with Sue moving into defense and Jo O’H stepping into the central role and Bev pushing up to the left half… we continued to keep the pressure in their half with some lovely runs but the 6s had also upped their game and were making it harder for us…
One of their breakaways resulted in a shot which was saved by Lucy P (Shoes) and proved to be her only touch of the game (thanks so much Shoes for doubling up for us!)
Our 3rd goal came from another scrabble at the goal mouth, but we’ll take what we can get!
The final flourish of the game was from yet another short with Av taking the straight shot as soon as she got the ball, sadly it missed by the tiniest of margins, unlucky Avril, what a goal that would’ve been!
At the full time whistle everyone said what a great game it was, all the 5s played really well and the 6s shouldn’t be disheartened as they too played well with real talent and excellent effort.. thanks every one for a brilliant game.
Special thanks to Chloe and Hazel for umpiring!
Final Result: 3-0
Goal Scorers: Jo O’H and Laura T x 2
